Computing & Informatics Department

HoD, Computing and Informatics Department

The department comprises three sections: Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Library Science, and Journalism and Mass Media. It offers integrated quality training to trainees, aligns with the institution's vision, mission, and core values, and provides ICT services to other departments. These services include computer support, maintenance, networking, and a user support helpdesk. Additionally, the department hosts the Open Distance Electronic Learning (ODeL) center for online learning.

Mission and Objectives

The department's mission is to:

  1. Conceive, develop, implement, and manage appropriate ICT solutions for Sigalagala Polytechnic.
  2. Deliver high-quality teaching and learning services.
  3. Train skilled ICT graduates to meet local and global job requirements.
  4. Graduate well-rounded individuals in information technology, information science, and media to contribute to Vision 2030.

ICT Section

The ICT section offers diploma and certificate courses, equipping trainees with relevant skills to compete in the information technology industry. Key skills include:

  • Programming
  • Computer Networking
  • Database Administration
  • System Administration
  • Computer Repair and Maintenance
  • Computer Applications

The section offers CBET courses:

  • ICT Technician Level 6 (Diploma)
  • ICT Technician Level 5 (Certificate)

It also offers KNEC courses:

  • Diploma in Information and Communication Technology (DICT)
  • Craft Certificate in Information Technology (CCIT)

Library Science Section

This established section produces graduates who work as information managers in various institutions, including high schools, universities, and the private sector. Previously offering Higher National Diploma, Diploma, and Certificate courses, it now offers CBET courses:

  • Library and Information Science Levels 5 and 6
  • Records and Archives Management Levels 5 and 6

The section aims to produce market-oriented graduates with holistic skills.

Journalism and Mass Media Section

This vibrant section offers industry-aligned courses in Journalism and Mass Media. Renowned for producing graduates with hands-on skills, the section focuses on training media professionals accredited by the Media Council of Kenya. It utilizes its highly competent trainers to provide industrial linkages to graduates.

The section offers ICM-examined programs:

  • Diploma in Journalism and Mass Media
  • Certificate in Journalism and Media Studies

It also offers CBET programs:

  • Broadcast Journalism Level 5 (Certificate)
  • Broadcast Journalism Level 6 (Diploma)

The section boasts professional facilities and equipment, and its graduates are readily absorbed by various organizations. It has acquired an FM radio frequency license and is developing partnerships with regional radio and TV stations for dual training programs.
