The Applied Sciences department at the Sigalagala National Polytechnic works with internal and external collaborators such as industry and consumer groups to deliver quality education while providing a favorable environment for staff to thrive. Its goal is to recognize, reinforce and promote interdependence among teaching, research and professional practice.
The courses are heavily lab-based with a focus on experimentation and methodical analysis of findings designed to give an excellent platform for future careers in preferred professions either in academic research or in the commercial sphere.
The educational philosophy of the department centers on experience-based learning or learning by doing. The programs include fieldwork, industry visits and internships outside the polytechnic. Practicality, Job Creation and employ-ability are at the forefront of what the Applied Sciences department does; its students bring together scientific techniques with social, ethical and professional dimensions of science.
State- of -the –art laboratory facilities support teaching and applied research. The scientific skills lecturers teach are in high demand in industries and its courses carry professional accreditation from leading bodies (Kenya Medical Technicians and Technologists Board, Pharmacy and Poisons Board). The department’s staff is professional and industry experienced and has a great deal to offer.
The Applied Sciences department is business focused, seeking to develop sustainable partnerships with industry. Businesses also access its excellent and ready-for-the-lab students through placements and graduate recruitment.As the HoD my role is to coordinate and supervise curriculum implementation in the department. We are also tasked with placement of students for Industrial attachment in liaison with the Industrial Liaisons office. The department has aligned its training programmes with Technical and Vocational, Education and Training (TVET) and the Vision 2030 strategic thinking.
We are tasked to produce Higher Diploma, Diploma and Certificate graduates with intellectual and hands on practical skills appropriate to the needs of the present and future of Kenya, the East African region and the global world. As Kenya moves to become an industrial hub, we ensure that our graduates acquire skills that ensure that they make a positive contribution to national development.
The Medical and Applied Sciences Department has five (6) sections namely; Applied Biology, Analytical Chemistry, Science Laboratory, Environmental Science and Technology, Chemical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering. Currently the Department offers certificate, diploma and Higher National Diploma courses in all the sections. With the recent elevation to a National Polytechnic, the department is expanding the academic programmes to also offer Food Technology. Pharmacy Technology, Biotechnology, Health Records management, HIV and Counseling, Forensic Science and Medical Laboratory Science. Sigalagala National Polytechnic will soon offer degree programmes in collaboration with Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology.
